NEW BUSINESS MODELS THROUGH SMART DATA

The importance of data has never been greater than today. Information is not only essential for decision-making, it is increasingly regarded as a valuable asset. This makes it all the more important to create new business models in order to offer unique services and stay ahead of the competition.

Current IT technologies, such as Industry 4.0, IoT and business intelligence, liberate enormous potential in conjunction with new data sources and analytics.

The high degree of integration and the option to involve business partners lead to networked communication, allowing new data-based business models, so-called smart IoT services, to emerge.

What are
IoT services?

IOT PLATFORMS ENABLE DIVERSE ECOSYSTEMS

The possibilities are nearly endless and incredibly varied! In mechanical engineering, for example, companies can position themselves in an economically sound and completely modern way by achieving financial security through pay-per-use models. In logistics, too, current IoT solutions go beyond mere tracking, monitoring and controlling – some even encompass the complete fleet management for trucks, ships and trains. Leading suppliers also integrate blockchain technology for the tracking and tracing of goods.

The concept is based on data acquisition and the networking of operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT). This creates significant competitive advantages:

  • the development & improvement of existing business processes or the creation of completely new business ideas by using I4.0/IoT data and analytics
  • community activities: Above all, IoT platforms have a technology base that makes it easy for partners to integrate new applications and services. These partners, in turn, can focus primarily on the diversification and scalability of their services.

What about added value? Start right now!

Through cloud-based integration with edbic, you can make the best use of your data and develop innovative services faster than your competitors – with greater flexibility and reduced risk! Expand your value chain and become more flexible, scalable and competitive.

Evaluations of real machine utilisation have made it possible, for example, to pay for machines and equipment purely on the basis of usage, that is, there is a new pay-per-use rental model that offers advantages to all parties:
The operator or manufacturer:
has full control over the workload and can therefore carry out predictive maintenance or provide full traceability in the event of damage.
The customer or user:
only pays for the actual use of the machine and thus avoids fixed costs that might have been considered risky or large investments.
This invoicing model makes sense above all if the loss in value of a given object is strongly related to its operating life. Of course, a whole range of other pay-per-use models can be realised and their potential is huge:

  • establishing new ecosystems, e.g. through direct settlement via banks
  • offering additional services, e.g. based on tool data
  • providing a marketplace for spare parts

Take a look at our use case below to learn more about pay-per-use!

Use Case: compacer pay-per-use using the anhand der MindSphere App

compacer’s app for MindSphere offers machine or device users automatic web-based billing depending on the runtime and workload of their rented tool. To get there, the manufacturer’s machines need to be equipped with appropriate sensors to capture the exact working hours and the workload of the machines in real time and store them on the MindSphere cloud. On this basis, bills will be generated automatically according to the pay-per-use rental model.

This model forms a “community triangle” of provider, customer and bank:

TECHNICAL SET-UP

The machine’s sensor data are transferred from the cloud to edbic at defined intervals, where they are integrated and used to calculate the current costs, to display the live dashboard, and to create invoices using e-Invoicing. The invoice is then stored in the archive and remains available at all times.

THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS BUSINESS MODEL ARE MANIFOLD

This model offers economic security for both the supplier and the customer, as the customer only pays for what he actually uses (easier to plan) and the supplier can very well estimate the total yield of an item over its lifetime. The data also help prevent situations where a client rents a machine that is actually too small for his needs, so that it always runs at maximum load. Instead, the system will recommend a larger machine that will run with fewer errors or rejects.
